Wednesday 7th April 2010, Auteuil

After the reappearance of Remember Rose, it was the turn of Viotti (Dream Well), unbeaten on three starts in 2008 but absent from the track for a year and a half, to make his comeback in the €48,000 Prix Guy Hunault Hurdle (5yos-3,600m). Just like his elder, the chesnut was unsuccessful but settled for a promising second place in front of his stable companion N'Oublie Jamais (Loup Solitaire), but behind Royal d'Arc (AQPS - Le Triton) who won handily. This AQPS was one of the most talented of his generation on the flat, having won the Bango and finished second in the Grand Prix des AQPS (Prix de Craon). Royal d'Arc was bred by SCEA Le Fragneau. His dam, Lextrienne (Neustrien) is a half sister of Pandolphe (Passing Sale), fifth in last year's Grand Steeple.

Estruval - AQPS on show in Paris

The first important race for AQPS horses of 2010 in the Parisian region, the €28,000 Prix d'Estruval (AQPS-4&5yos-2,400m) was won by Saint Gratien (AQPS - Fragrant Mix), returning to the flat after a spell over jumps at Pau this winter. "I didn't think he was strong or mature enough to continue jumping", confided Etienne Leenders, "
Saint Gratien was bred by Jacques Cyprès. He is a brother of Matignon (Gunboat Diplomacy), notably third in the Grande Course de Haies de Pau (L.), and of Porte d'Auteuil (Network), a winner on the flat, over hurdles and over cross country fences for François Nicolle.

that's why I brought him back to the flat. He will now go for the Prix Bango, here on April 22nd. Then he will have a break before going jumping this autumn."

Sunday, March 28th 2010 - Auteuil. She was the best 3yo AQPS over the flat and won the classic Prix Jacques de Vienne, the AQPS' top 3yo contest last season, writes Le Frog. She could now become a leading player over the obstacles after her impressing debut at Auteuil. Ridden with confidence by Christophe Pieux, who took more time checking out the opposition over his shoulders than actually look in front of him in the run-in, Sister Palma (AQ-Kahyasi) took the 44,000 Prix Samaritain AQPS Hurdle (4&5yo - 3,500m) without much hassle. The Jehan Bertran de Balanda-trained 4yo filly just left Sortie de Secours (AQ-Trempolino), a promising filly trained by Guy Cherel and bred by the Haras de Saint-Voir, to score by six lengths unextended. "She's a lovely filly and a pleasure to train," said the winning trainer. "I am very pleased because it's a nice story. We bred her along with my great friends Anthony Baudoin and François Hoffet (whose colours she's representing)."

Sister Palma's overall record now reads 7-3-3-1 and she will probably win a good hurdle race very soon. She's out of Miss Palma (AQ-Great Palm), an AQPS winner over the flat who already gave Miss Sarenne (AQ-Robin des Prés), second in the Finot Hurdle (L) at Auteuil. Miss Palma is a sister to Prix Jacques de Vienne-winner and five-time winner Miss Academy (Vidéo Rock), who also finished fourth 4th in the Fred Winter 4yo Hurdle Handicap (Gr3) and the Aintree equivalent in 2005, and to the good Mister No (Graveron).

The other AQPS race on Sunday, the €50,000 Prix Mitsouko III Chase (5yo - 4,100m) was also won with great ease by Raphy de la Roche (AQPS - Dom Alco). This Francois Cottin-trained gelding won at his 4th attempt over hurdles at 3 years old at Pau and was subsequently 4th for his chasing debut there. Out one year, he came back only three weeks earlier and scored the try this time

Wednesday 24th March 2010, Enghien. Septland (AQ-Agent Bleu) achieved a second consecutive victory when she romped home in the €44,000 Prix John Cunnington (4yo Females-3,500m) despite some minor errors in her jumping. Winning trainer, Philippe Peltier, said afterwards: "Today was a good opportunity for her so I ran her once more over hurdles. Her future entries will be in chases here at Enghien before heading to Auteuil." Jockey David Cottin added; ""Despite some small mistakes she free wheeled round the final bend. Once she was in front I was able to ride her as I wanted."

Prise de Risque (Take Risks) finished back in second place on her first run back. The representative of Tony Clout had her first run over fences at the end of last year when finishing third here at Enghien. She is undoubtedly a promising filly who had the misfortune of encountering a very talented opponent in Septland.

Bred by Thierry Cyprès, Septland is very well bred. This AQPS is out of Jubyland (Kadalko) who is a sister of the dam of Cumberland (Cyborg) and Embiez (Lute Antique), both winners of the Prix Maurice Gillois (Gr1). Philippe Peltier also trains the older sister of Septland, Réunion (Fragrant Mix), wha has been running over fences since last May - With www.frogsracing.com

Sunday 21st March 2010, Auteuil. Tout Rouge(AQPS - Dom Alco) showed natural ability and talent when winning the €52,000 Prix Rush Hurdle (3yo Males-3,000m), which is reserved to horse that have never run over jumps before. "From the moment he arrived at the yard I liked him. He is a natural jumper," announced trainer Guillaume Macaire.  Tout Rouge looks to be one to watch for the future, especially as he is an AQPS and it is quite rare for AQPS horses to dominate their thoroughbred counterparts as 3 year olds at Auteuil. His behaviour throughout the race also looked like a positive sign; relaxed in the hands of his jockey, he jumped with ease and looked mature already. On the flat he picked up easily with little encouragement when asked for an effort by Jacques Ricou.

Bred by his owners, Haras de Saint Voir, Tout Rouge comes from a jumping family. His dam Loi du Plus Fort (Snurge) won three races over jumps including the Prix Samaritain on her debut at Auteuil. Two of her produce are currently in training, of which Tout Rouge is the first winner.

Tuesday 9th March 2010, Enghien The result of the €50,000 Prix des Barouds III Chase (AQPS - 4&5yos - 3,500m) was clear a long way from the finish. Coming round the final bend the five horses left in the running were already in their finishing order. The impressive Saphira Mans (AQPS - Fragrant Mix) led the race in its entirety before striding out to beat Mahe (AQPS - Goldneyev)by four lengths, with Salon de Provence (AQPS - Antarctique) a further six lengths back in third. "All of my team have put in a lot of hard work which paid off this afternoon," said winning trainer Jean-Luc Pelletan. "She is capable of anything this mare; I really like her a lot. I have no idea whatsoever of where she will run next."

Saphira Mans does indeed seem very versatile, this four year old mare has finished second four times on the grass on the flat, won over 2,400m on fibresand and was successful on her only hurdling attempt on her last start in January at Pau. Her dam Friska du Moulin (AQPS - Royal Charter) was also a winner over fences and on the flat. She has produced two previous winners, Quissisia Mans and Nidea du Moulin, both by Video Rock.

Tuesday 2nd March 2010, Enghien. Septland (AQPS - Agent Bleu) out jumped her rivals to win the €44,000 Prix Marise Hurdle (4yo Females-3,500m) by 8 lengths. This unraced filly took the lead on the far straight and then easily kicked clear on the flat."She caught our eye in the mornings", remarked David Berra, rider of the winner for trainer Philippe Peltier. "Everything comes easily to her. Today she over jumped a little, but that's because she lacks maturity." Running in the colours of Jacques Détré, Septland was bred by her joint owner Thierry Cyprès. She is out of Jubyland (AQPS - Kadalko), who is a sister of Cumberland (AQPS - Cyborg), winner of the Prix Maurice Gillois, and Embiez (AQPS - Lute Antique). Jubyland has already produced Réunion (AQPS - Fragrant Mix), placed second in the Prix Al Capone II at Auteuil.

Patiently ridden by Olivier Subileau (for his first ever winner at Enghien), Quart Monde (AQPS - Network) emerged the winner after a hard fought battle with Quocotiep (AQPS - Network) in the €50,000 Prix Fernand Roy Chase (AQPS-4,500m). "He ran badly for no real reason at Pau, analysed trainer François Nicolle. "Olivier gave him a very nice ride, I think it was a good idea to put a jockey with a claim on him because there wasn't much in it at the finish. He is a very good jumper, who already ran well here at the end of last year." Quart Monde was bred by Jacques Cyprès, in whose colours he runs. His dam, In Extremis (AQPS - Quart de Vin) is out of a sister of The Fellow and Al Capone II. At stud she has already produced Oakham (AQPS - Agent Bleu), winner of the Grand Steeple des AQPS at Lion d'Angers, Panique Pas (AQPS - Vidéo Rock), winner of the Prix Samaritain at Auteuil, and Rock In (AQPS - Vidéo Rock), a useful chaser.

Sunday, March 7th 2010 - Auteuil. A 4+ hurdle contest for beginners, the €58,000 Prix Rohan (L - 3,600m) has always been a preferred aim for talented flat horses switching to the jumps, writes Le Frog. The likes of Latin Mood and Questarabad (AQPS) feature amongst the latest winners of the race. Everybody was zeroing on Longchamp winning son of Montjeu's Tsar de Russie to take the honours and it looked as if the Marcel Rolland-trained beast was about to reach expectations when jumping the second last along AQPS 4yo Sans Histoire (AQPS -Blushing Flame). He actually took over the long standing leader between the two last hurdles but the grey halfbred had the last laugh as she edged her thoroughbred rival on the post. Bred and owned by Nicolas de Lageneste's Haras de Saint-Voir, Sans Histoire had started her career well over the flat with a promising 5th place at Lyon in November. She'd finished well there after an easy start. This half sister to Mort de Rire (AQPS - Luchiroverte, his name meaning "Die Laughing" in French), a winner over the chase in Leicester, showed lots of stamina and willingness to score over a more seasoned flat horse. "She had the rail and I like her a lot", quipped her trainer Thomas Trapenard.

Sunday, March 7th 2010 - Auteuil. Unless something wrong happens to him, Questarabad (AQPS - Astarabad) is a certainty for the major hurdle contests this season in France. The Marcel Rolland-trained AQPS 6yo shrugged off his 70 kilos burden in the €130,000 Prix Juigne Hurdle (Gr3 - 3,600m) to come from last to the fore in the back stretch and then jumped the last two hurdles for fun to score by 4 lengths almost walking with Vitray (Morespeed) second over a handicap like bunch of jumpers.

Rider Regis Schmidlin was awed by his mount : "He's become so easy to ride, so much better than the others... I was worried about the pace on such a short distance and I just asked him to come by in the backstretch. He was with the leader within two strides and the rest is history. He's awesome." There is not much to say about the others. Rolland horses showed that the Chantilly-based handlers were able to overcome the adverse weather conditions. On even terms, Questarabad is the best hurdler we've got over here and that's about as much we can say so far.  More news on www.frogsracing.com
